Ursprünglich für den 9. Januar geplant, verschob AMD den Start der Radeon HD 7950 auf den heutigen Tag - laut eigener Aussage soll so ausreichende Verfügbarkeit gewährleistet werden. Aus diesem Grund sind vermutlich auch gleich mehrere Hersteller in der Lage, eigene Kühllösungen auf der Radeon HD 7950 zu verbauen. Die ersten Modelle haben wir uns in einem gesonderten Artikel genauer angeschaut. AMD zeigt sich ohnehin sehr flexibel, wenn es um den Launch neuer Produkte geht. Die Radeon HD 7970 (Hardwareluxx-Artikel) zog man vom 9. Januar 2012 auf den 22. Dezember 2011 vor. Dies alles ist aber nur noch ein Nebengeräusch, denn heute will AMD mit der Radeon HD 7950 auch in der oberen Mittelklasse mit der "Southern Island"-Generation einsteigen. Wie auch schon bei der Radeon-HD-6900-Serie unterscheiden sich die beiden schnellsten Single-GPU-Karten nur in einigen wenigen Details.

The R7950 retains the standard clock speed of the HD7950 but what makes the card different from the 'stock' HD7950 at first glance is the cooler. The GOST cooler really is a thing of beauty and while I do not wish to pre-empt it's ability, if looks are anything to go by, this card will be one seriously cool customer. Looks however can be deceiving and none were this more so than with the XFX R7950. While the clock speeds may remain the same, the card is far from being a reference design. The PCB as we will see is very different from the stock design as it features XFX's 'X' features of both power management, cooling and on-board components which make this card truly 'custom'.

This Tahiti Pro is ever so slightly cut down compared to the HD 7970's Tahiti XT, but the disparity in performance is mostly down to the lower core clockspeed.The AMD Radeon HD 7950 is clocked at a fairly conservative 800MHz compared to the HD 7970's 925MHz.We say conservative as the Tahiti Pro GPU, from all the cards we've seen, is more than capable of topping the 1GHz mark.
